What are the advantages of a plunger pump?

With the continuous advancement of hydraulic technology, demand for hydraulic pumps is steadily increasing across various industries, driving the need for high-performance, high-parameter Plunger pump It is increasingly favored by people. Why are plunger pumps so attractive compared with other types of pumps?

 Plunger pump

Plunger pumps are critical components in fluid systems. Plunger pump It operates by utilizing the reciprocating motion of the plunger within the cylinder liner to alter the density of the sealed cylindrical chamber, thereby generating a series of suction and hydraulic effects. The advantages of plunger pumps are primarily manifested in the following aspects.

  1. Plunger pumps are characterized by high rated pressure and strong pressure resistance. In actual oil production, crude oil is stratified and distributed at varying depths below the surface, resulting in differing formation pressures that must be accommodated through adaptive adjustments and the ability to withstand high pressures. Moreover, variations in inlet piping can lead to non-uniform pressure distribution, yielding different pressure readings. The high-pressure resistance of plunger pumps helps maintain stable oil production and ensures the efficient operation of other oil-extraction equipment.

  2. Plunger pumps deliver highly efficient pumping performance. Compared with the pumping efficiency of conventional centrifugal pumps, there is still room for improvement in plunger pump efficiency. Centrifugal pumps have a large displacement but low pump efficiency; they are suitable only for relatively stable pressure ranges, with efficiency typically ranging from 45% to 75%. In contrast, plunger pumps feature small displacement, high head, and high efficiency, with typical efficiency around 80%. The adoption of plunger pumps is an important means of enhancing oil recovery efficiency.

  3. Operation and management are relatively straightforward, and the flow regulation range is relatively wide. Plunger pump Its structure and design are complex, yet it boasts high maneuverability. Operators can perform their tasks efficiently through a series of well-defined operational steps. A user-friendly design not only helps prevent operational errors but also serves as a key means of enhancing efficiency. Meanwhile, technological advancements have continuously expanded the application scope of plunger pumps, significantly increasing the flexibility of flow regulation and enabling them to play a vital role in oilfield water injection operations.

Piston pumps are classified into two representative structural types: axial piston pumps and radial piston pumps.

As a new type of high-efficiency pump with advanced technology, the radial piston pump is poised to become an important component in the application fields of reciprocating piston pumps as domestic production continues to accelerate. A radial piston pump is a type of reciprocating piston pump in which the direction of piston or plunger reciprocation is perpendicular to the drive shaft. The operating principle of the radial piston pump is as follows: the driving torque is transmitted from the drive shaft to the star-shaped hydraulic cylinder rotor via a cross coupling, while the stator remains free from any lateral forces. The rotor is mounted on the port shaft.

Radially arranged pistons housed within the rotor are brought into close contact with the eccentric-throw stator via hydrostatically balanced slipper shoes. The pistons are connected to the spherical heads of the slipper shoes and secured by circlips. A second retaining ring clamps the slipper against the stationary stator. As the pump rotates, centrifugal force and hydraulic pressure press the slipper against the inner surface. Due to the eccentricity, the pistons reciprocate as the rotor turns, with a stroke that is twice the amount of the eccentricity. The degree of stator eccentricity can be adjusted by means of two pistons positioned radially opposite each other on the pump housing.
