1. Advantages
(1) High working pressure, volumetric efficiency, and overall efficiency. Due to the ease of machining of the plunger and cylinder bore, dimensional accuracy and surface quality can meet stringent requirements; high matching accuracy results in minimal oil leakage, enabling operation at high pressures—typically 20–40 MPa, with peaks up to 100 MPa.
(2) High power transmission capability. By appropriately increasing the plunger diameter or the number of plungers, the flow rate can be increased, enabling high-pressure fluid to transmit high power.
(3) Wide speed regulation range.
(4) Long service life and high power density. The main components of a plunger pump operate under pressure, fully leveraging material strength, resulting in a long service life and a low power-to-weight ratio.
(5) Excellent bidirectional variable capability. By adjusting the plunger stroke, the flow rate can be varied, which readily accommodates various types of variable-displacement designs.
2. Disadvantages
(1) Stricter cleanliness requirements for the working medium (valve seats and valves feature improved diversion designs).
(2) Large flow pulsations and high noise levels.
(3) Complex structure, high cost, and difficult maintenance.
Plunger pumps are a type of water pump. The entire pump industry is a quintessential investment-driven sector, with market demand heavily influenced by national macroeconomic policies—particularly in the water conservancy, construction, and energy sectors. Hydraulic plunger pumps are a subtype of plunger pumps. Within the hydraulic industry, there are no enterprises with annual output value exceeding RMB 1 billion; even those with annual output above RMB 500 million are relatively few. The industry’s total annual sales are less than the annual sales of a single company. When the supporting component industries lack the competitiveness to rival foreign firms, domestic market demand for imported products will be subject to stringent and often indifferent artificial controls. In the construction machinery sector, the majority of profits are siphoned off by component suppliers, leaving original equipment manufacturers feeling both aggrieved and powerless. Against this backdrop, capital from OEMs and other related industries has been steadily flowing into the hydraulic sector, with investments totaling more than RMB 1 billion. This development will undoubtedly intensify industry competition and reshape the existing industrial structure and order. Plunger pumps are typical positive-displacement hydraulic machines driven by a prime mover, converting input mechanical energy into fluid pressure energy and delivering it to the system in the form of pressure and flow. They serve as the power source for hydraulic systems. Thanks to their ability to convey fluids under high pressure, they are widely used across various sectors of industrial production and everyday life.
Plunger pumps are widely used in high-pressure, high-flow, and high-power systems, as well as applications requiring flow regulation, such as gantry planers, broaching machines, hydraulic presses, and construction machinery.
1. Plunger pumps come in various forms.
2. Based on the arrangement and direction of motion of the pistons, piston pumps can be classified into Rexroth radial piston pumps and Rexroth axial piston pumps.
3. Depending on the method of flow distribution, piston pumps can be classified as swashplate (straight-axis) type and axial-type.
